Greetings and Percussutations to You.
The New Year is off to a wonderful beginning. . . Here’s the scoop:
The SB Hot Shots have just completed our first season of rehearsals, and did our first public
performance at the downtown Farmer’s Market in Santa Barbara. The players were all between ten
and thirteen years old, and were students of mine from various local campuses. We had a total
of twelve rehearsals, which we used to learn six traditional West African arrangements, and
two original compositions. We also involved the audience with body percussion and singing,
and the whole performance was truly special. (I am a v-e-r-y proud director, ha-ha!)
Now its break time, and we start again in April, with performances in May. Stay tuned . . .
Locally, I was in residence at Franklin school in January, and am now at Hope school for the next
five weeks. This is my first residency at Hope, and the enthusiasm and musical talent of the
students is amazing. ‘Looking forward to our Family Night..!
The recording sessions with Robinson continue, and I am very pleased with the results of our
efforts. Nearly every day, the songs are the first things on my mind when I awaken, and are often
the last thing on my mind as I go to sleep. The project drives me, leads me, compels me, and is
the greatest musical endeavor I have ever undertaken. No completion date yet, but I can tell
you I have four tracks nearly finished, six more in various states of completion, and rough
versions of the other four tracks, making a total of fourteen altogether. When the singles
are ready, they’ll be posted on the MySpace page. Waahoooo!
If you have not yet made your plans to attend the Seattle
World Rhythm Festival, DO IT! As always, it will be at
the Seattle Center (near the Space Needle), and is TOTALLY
FREE OF CHARGE. Dates: April 25 27, ’08. I’ll be teaching
the Easy Intro to 6/8 clinic (again), as well as a hand
drum class for the youth on Kid’s Day, and, for the first
time, co-facilitating a class with the one and only Simon
McCarty. More info available at: www.swps.org
See you there!
Keep on groovin'

SYNERGY
The SYNERGY Project provides cooperative drum circles for sixth and seventh graders in central Santa Barbara schools. Synergy helps students make the
transition from elementary to junior high by emphasizing positive ideals like cooperation and honoring diversity, just as the “kids” are heading into
adulthood. Thanks to the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation’s Education Outreach Program, facilitator/artist Cameron Tummel provides all of the instruments and
instruction for all of the students to participate. Rhythm circles emphasize cooperation, appreciation of diversity, and artistic expression, and the drumming
is a great way for kids (of all ages) to use their physical enthusiasm to make awesome music! More than 8,000 local kids, parents, and teachers were able to
participate in Synergy in ’06/’07, at no cost to the schools, thanks to local donations and the S. B. Bowl Foundation. . .
Synergy Provides Musical Enrichment for Santa Barbara's :
Youth
C. Tummel to provide drum circle events for sixth grade students
at more than a dozen schools in Santa Barbara. All sixth grade
students at these campuses are eligible to participate. All
instruments provided. Each campus to receive several drum circles
and/or other rhythm events for its students.
C. Tummel also to provide drum circle events at Santa Barbara
Junior High School for all of the incoming seventh graders during
orientation.
Families
Each campus has the opportunity to host a Community Rhythm Circle
for the students and their families. This event can include
as many as two hundred people, all playing drums and other percussion
instruments together. Community Rhythm Circles to emphasize
cooperation and appreciation of diversity.
Synergy '07 - '08 is offering rhythm events for students, teachers,
and families of Cesar Chavez Charter, Cleveland, Cold Spring,
Franklin, Montecito Union, Peabody Charter, Roosevelt and Washington.
Synergy will also provide rhythm events for primary students
at additional campuses via the Child Development Project.
